PRMIA Chicago Commodities/Energy Risk Management Event
On June 30th, the Chicago chapter of PRMIA held a very successful event in joint with the Chicago chapter of CAIA and the Arditti Center for Risk Management at DePaul University on “Commodities/Energy Risk Management.”
The first presentation was entitled “Intelligent Commodity Investing,” and presented by Hilary Till Research Associate, EDHEC-Risk Institute; Fellow, Arditti Center for Risk Management, DePaul University; and Principal, Premia Capital Management (Chicago). Hilary spoke on commodity-futures investing and the impact speculation within markets has had on the current debate.
Nedia Miller is the founder of MILLER CTA, and member of CME GROUP (New York) spoke on the topic of “Oil Price Risk and Hedging Strategies.” Her discussion on the widening of the WTI-Brent spread due to storage constraints at WTI’s delivery point was a well-received topic, which was examined further amongst those in attendance during the Q&A session.
Lastly, Jeff Mantel, Ph.D., CEO of Mantel Group, (New Jersey) spoke on "Impending US Regulations and Their Effects," which included the very popular topic of the implications of the Dodd-Frank rule and how liquidity is affected indirectly by the “too big to fail” regulations and the potential resulting breakup of larger firms into smaller ones. His topic reflected added humor and engaged the audience well.
For the event, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Finance at DePaul University Ali Fatemi, served as moderator.
