About Event: The Conference on Financial Engineering has been held between 20-21 October at the Balcova Campus of the Izmir University of Economics. The leading efforts have been shown by our Regional Director Associate Professor Coşkun KÜÇÜKÖZMEN. Not only have there been attendances from universities, participants from private sector, financial institutions and media and communication sector but also there have been representatives from Regulatory and Supervisory Authorities and Exchanges.
More than 30 presentations made throughout the Conference by several participants.

Although some regulatory agencies did not sponsor the conference, they have been represented at the event at various levels of their staff including either young professionals or seasoned executives. Among them “Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency”, “Capital Markets Board of Turkey”, “Istanbul Stock Exchange” can be named.

The three keynote speakers of the conference were from the top-notch universities in United States of America and Canada has also delivered their keynote speeches:
• Alumni Prof. Dr. William ZIEMBA of University of British Columbia (Financial Modeling and Stochastic Optimization, Emeritus in the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia );
• Prof. Dr. H. Nejat SEYHUN of University of Michigan (Director of the Financial Engineering Program at the University of Michigan);
• Prof. Dr. Stan URYASEV of University of Florida (Director of Risk Management & Financial Engineering Lab.)
They have come all the way from U.S. or Canada to make great contributions to the above mentioned conference.
Another distinguished keynote speaker was Prof. Dr. Turalay KENÇ, Member of Monetary Policy Committee and Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Republic of Turkey (CBRT), delivered a keynote speech on Debt, Financial Crises and Regulation.

PRMIA-Turkey Chapter has also taken place amongst those presentations with its session led by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Baha KARAN, one of the Regional Directors of PRMIA-Turkey Chapter. Prof. Dr. John Simpson of Curtin University- Australia who joined the Conference upon a special invitation by Professor Karan on behalf of the PRMIA Chapter, Turkey. He made a great presentation about short-selling activities that take place in Australian Market.

One of the other spectacular and highlighted academic-work has been presented by our Steering Committee Member Dr. Murad KAYACAN and his co-worker Yener COŞKUN, one of the seasoned executives from “Capital Markets Board of Turkey”.

Mr. Ayhan YUKSEL, one of the other Steering Committee Members in PRMIA-Turkey Chapter, has made a wonderful presentation covering Monte Carlo based Bayesian approaches used for estimating different stochastic volatility models.

Besides from their contributions on technical aspects of financial engineering, other valuable presenters made great contributions to the conference theme either from technical or regulatory aspects.
The Conference, which took place in Izmir, can be listed in the regular activities of PRMIA to be held at a university in the form of a conference. PRMIA, as a co-sponsor of this event, plans to make this conference series a continuum in the Izmir Region.

As PRMIA Turkey SC members, we visited Dr Erdem Bascı, Governor of Central Bank of Turkey on 2 Aug 2011. Attendees were Prof Dr. Mehmet Baha Karan (RD), Assc Prof Coskun Kucukozmen (RD), Erhan Sahin (Deputy RD), Dr Murad Kayacan, Dr Huseyin Iskender Karagul, Dr Gultekin Isıklar and Dr. Ayhan Yuksel.

We introduced PRMIA Turkey and each SC member individually. Also gave brief information about PRMIA Turkey activities and about event which was held in Istanbul Stock Exchange with participation of Mr Huseyin Erkan Chairman of Istanbul Stock Exchange and Prof Dr Vedat Akgiray Chairman of Capital Markets Board of Turkey.

Governor Mr Bascı gave a brief information about the current distressed global economic outlook and mentioned that CBT is doing its best to take necessary steps to stablize financial markets and Turkish economy. He also stressed his support to PRMIA Turkey activites.

Later SC members visited Deputy Governor Prof Dr Turalay Kenc. During our one hour meeting with Mr Kenc. PRMIA Turkey Chapter was introduced and a brief information about Chapter activities was given. Mr Kenc also mentioned his support to PRMIA Turkey.
