Global Event Series 2009 on Operational Risk

Established methods of quantifying and managing operational risk will come under scrutiny as PRMIA members in almost 20 chapters gather to discuss lessons learned from the 2008 financial sector crisis in such areas as governance, due diligence, business strategy, reputation, fraud, model, custody and collateral risk and how extreme credit and market risk conditions impact operational risk.

Chapters involved in the operational risk series are listed below and will be holding events through November 2009. Events will continue to be posted throughout the next couple of months so please continue to visit the chapter pages of the chapters listed below for more information about their event.

Over 600 members took part in the member survey "Operational Risk Survey of Approaches and Implementation Practices". A detailed report including summary and analysis of the results will be made available to all members who took the survey. Sustaining members have access to the report through the exclusive content box on the PRMIA Homepage. PRMIA would like to extend special acknowledgment to Edward B. Dumas for his assistance in reviewing and structuring the survey questions and reviewing the content of the report. Edward B. PRMIA Training Course to Feature James Lam

PRMIA announces Enterprise Risk Management, a classroom training course led by risk industry expert James Lam. This one-day course will take place on November 4 in New York and will feature Mr. Lam's discussion of best practices in designing and implementing an ERM program.

Mr. Lam, who is noted as the first-ever chief risk offer (CRO) and early advocate of ERM, will leverage his industry and consulting experiences to discuss implementation challenges and strategies, including case studies from different companies and industries.

What you will learn:

  • Establishing a strong business case for ERM, and overcoming organizational barriers
  • Developing a practical ERM framework and implementation plan
  • Demonstrating tangible benefits from ERM adoption
  • Implementing and integrating ERM into strategic and business decisions
  • Establishing effective risk management policies and explicit risk tolerance levels
  • Developing effective dashboard reporting for senior management and the board
  • Creating an effective feedback loop for ERM performance

    PRMIA Announces Associate PRM Webinar Series

    Beginning October 5 and continuing through November 23, PRMIA will offer the Associate PRM Webinar Series on Mondays from 12:00 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. Eastern Time.

    The Associate PRM Webinar Series is intended to prepare individuals for the Associate PRM exam, an innovative PRMIA certificate program intended for staff entering the risk management profession, those who wish to broaden their skills, or those who interface with risk management disciplines on a regular basis such as auditing, accounting, legal, and systems development personnel who should understand fundamental risk management methods and practices. It covers the core concepts of risk management allowing non-specialists to interpret risk management information and reports, make critical assessments, and evaluate the implications and the limitations of such results.

    The training series has been created and will be delivered by the PRMIA leaders responsible for preparing and managing the Associate PRM exam syllabus and question database. The series' sessions can be accessed anywhere with an Internet connection.
