How to Prepare for the PRM

Overview

If you are a practicing risk manager you are already preparing for the exams by going to work each day and interacting with other professionals. You're also preparing if you use the free resources of the PRMIA web site, read industry magazines, software manuals, company policies and procedures, academic journals, websites and regulatory notices, attend PRMIA chapter meetings, participate in on-line forums and attend risk management conferences.

Still, the requirements of the PRM exams are high. We recommend a disciplined approach to assessing your current skills and developing the new skills that you will need to be a successful candidate. The information below will direct you to many of these resources, but we encourage you to develop your professional skills even beyond those needed to attain the PRM.

The areas in which you feel least prepared should be your first focus. Use the Self-Study Guide and recommended reading materials listed below to prepare. The Self-Study Guide will tell you how much time you should expect to spend on each topic area, ensuring that you organize your study time successfully.

Self-Study Guide

PRMIA provides this free resource as a tool for you to plan your preparation in a disciplined fashion.

Reading Materials

Online Training Courses and Diagnostics

Over 85% of PRM candidates told us in a survey that they would like online training resources made available to them. We listen to our members. Courses like ePRM Coach from KESDEE and PASSPRO PRM are accessible to PRMIA members through the PRMIA web site. Click here to learn more. PRMIA also has made simulated PRM exams available online. These exams test your current skills and then provide you with very specific guidance on where you should focus your studies and what texts to use, allowing you to create a more finely-tuned study plan. You can also use them as last minute review of your knowledge and understanding just before your testing date.

Online Study Groups

We all benefit from having a study plan and others with whom to prepare jointly. Since the PRM is offered in over 350 cities worldwide, you can join others from around the world in an online study group. There are 13-week plans offered for each of the PRM exams and you can sign-up for as many at one time as you would like. Each week you will receive a guide to suggested reading materials and online resources as well as a set of define learning objectives and study questions. Training Course Providers and Local Study Groups

More and more companies are offering training courses designed especially for the PRM exams. Please e-mail us if you would like to have these companies contact you.

Another very effective method of preparation is to start or join a local PRM Study Group. Many major cities have at least one group preparing. Review and Contact existing groups or contact us to start a new group.
