IBOR Reform – the European View
Thought Leadership Webinar: The LIBOR scandal resulted in several banks being fined for more than $10Bn. This led to increasing regulatory as well as market driven activities in the widely manifested IBOR benchmarks. The EU Benchmark Regulation forces market participants to prepare for the discontinuation of Eonia by end of 2019 with the future of Euribor still being uncertain.

Working groups established within different jurisdictions are dealing with specific benchmarks in order to tackle the IBOR reform. A progress evaluation of the working groups shows a clear delay of the EUR area with main benchmarks Eonia and Euribor. The Eonia transition to ESTER has been identified as a key risk and market participants are longing for the working group’s final transition.
The tight schedule between the announced ESTER go live date of earliest Q4 2019 and the January 2020 EU BMR deadline forbidding new trades referencing a non-compliant benchmark, such as Eonia, amplifies the challenge. The development of term rates requires a fast-paced progress on ESTER based derivative markets. The webinar will discuss the key challenges of the IBOR reform with a focus on Eonia and Euribor as well as the unique European regulatory framework.
