The pervasiveness of risk in the workings of everyday business means that boards must factor risk as an integral part of organizational strategy. What is the symbiotic relationship between the senior management and the risk department? Is there any? And who is accountable? This dynamic event will explore how this practically works through the lenses of the senior executive and how the function of risk management is perceived by those to whom it is supposed to serve.

Speakers

Jeremy Masding, ACIB, FCIB, DipFS, CBD, MBA
Born in Wales, Jeremy is an experienced career banker having worked with Barclays Bank in a variety of different roles between 1984 and 2007. These roles included branch banking, international banking and in head office as a director of strategy development. In later years, Jeremy was a board director of Barclaycard, responsible for UK Consumer Finance.

For a year (1998/1999) Jeremy worked on secondment from Barclays with the Cabinet Office in the UK. Jeremy was Group Chief Executive of Central Trust plc. (2007-2009), a specialist loan broker and lender, before founding and launching Step One Finance Limited, a specialist lender in 2010. In parallel, between 2010-12, Jeremy was Non-Executive Chairman of the Richmond Group, playing a leading role in sourcing and negotiating complex funding lines. From early 2012, Jeremy led the fundamental transformation of Permanent TSB PLC (‘PTSB’), a leading
Irish Retail and SME Bank that was nationalised post-GFC as a result of the Irish Sovereign and Banking crisis. PTSB is now profitable for the first time since 2007 with strong Capital and Liquidity ratios. The work can best be described by through a series of quotes: “He inherited one of Europe’s worst banks when he took the job in 2012. The Welshman somehow managed to keep the show on the road. That is, by any measure, a turnaround that deserves to be recognised when there were many commentators who believed the bank could not make it work. Masding saved an institution from collapse.” “[Masding] led the bank through extraordinary times and, did so with a grace and professionalism which
few in that position could have shown.”

Jeremy announced that he was moving on from PTSB during 2020 to pursue new CEO opportunities in 2021. Pending the sourcing of a new Bank CEO role, Jeremy is: investing in a portfolio of start-ups; advising in the FinTech, Banking Consultancy and Banking PE spaces; undertaking Chairman/Non-Executive roles in Technology and Medical Innovation; authoring a book; and, pursuing further education in spheres such as FinTech, Leadership and M&A.

Jeremy is an Associate and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, a Chartered Bank Director, holds an MBA from Manchester Business School and is an alumnus of Wharton Business School’s Advanced Management Programme. Jeremy was Vice-President of the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland between 2018 and 2020.
